Members Meeting - October 2022

JASNA October 2022

Sense & Sensibility in the City of Gardens

Kathleen, Janice, Sandra, Christina M, Christina DH and myself delighted one and all with recollections, compliments, opinions, pictures and more of our time at the conference in Victoria BC. We each gave a description of the breakout, general, plenary sessions, workshops, and film showings we attended. Some of the topics covered included a wonderful workshop on costumes, dueling, sex in Sense & Sensibility, viewing first editions (not under glass) of Jane's five novels and original signature, wine tasting and dancing! We ran out of time to hear attending the conference from the perspective of a companion. Thanks to Christina's husband Tadeusz for the following:

A Companion’s Perspective on the 2022 JASNA AGM in Victoria, BC

“This was my first opportunity to be a Companion. I was excited to attend the event, the location and the venue.  Being a Companion allowed me to enjoy Victoria and choose my own activities away from the conference.  I was immediately impressed with JASNA’s welcome.  It was delightful to see attendees in full costume out and about around Victoria. The expectations I had of the banquet were exceeded: the meal was well prepared, and the company at our table was lively and refreshing.  I enjoyed the variety of period clothing at the promenade. I was eager to see the ball.  The live music and the dancing were a pleasure to hear and to watch. The opportunity to see a collection of first editions of the novels and an actual Jane Austen signature was a bonus. The brunch was nice, and the presentation about duelling was informative and succinct. If someone has an opportunity to be a companion at a JASNA AGM, even if they are not familiar with Jane Austen, they will experience an exciting and wonderful event.

Thanks to Jane P for her technical assistance in preparing the AGM presentation.

"Her Reading Was Very Extensive": Austen and Her Community of Great Readers

Tuesday, November 8 at 5 PM Eastern -  Throughout her life, Jane and the members of her household belonged to circulating libraries and reading societies (another source of books), both of which included current titles. Since reading for Jane Austen was not primarily a solitary activity, this talk explores evidence of sociable reading in her community of great readers. In this talk, we welcome Persuasions editor and long-time JASP friend Susan Allen Ford (Delta State University) to the program as our co-host for the 2022/2023 series.

Sister Novelists: Reading Jane Austen through the Trailblazing Porter Sisters

Tuesday, November 15 at 5 PM Eastern - In this illustrated lecture, Devoney Looser (Arizona State University) will present stories from her new book, Sister Novelists: The Trailblazing Porter Sisters, Who Paved the Way for Austen and the Brontës. Before the Brontë sisters picked up their pens, or Jane Austen's heroines Elizabeth and Jane Bennet became household names, the literary world was celebrating a different pair of sisters: Jane and Anna Maria Porter. They socialized among the rich and famous, tried to hide their family's considerable debt, and fell dramatically in and out of love.

Jane Austen and Lord Byron: Closer Than You Might Think

Tuesday, December 13 at 5 PM Eastern

Jane Austen and Lord Byron are often thought of as opposites, but they actually had much in common. In this talk, Christine Kenyon Jones (University College London) explores their points of contact and their near-misses, and argues that Byron and Austen were – both biographically and literarily – closer than we might think.
