For the March edition, JAH was delighted to welcome art historian Emma Rutherford who specialises in portrait miniatures and silhouettes. As a consultant at the Philip Mould Gallery, Emma assisted them in our purchase of the portrait miniatures of the Digweed family in 2018 and sold them the miniature of Mary Pearson in 2019.

From the Jane Austen's House update: Emma began her career working in the Victoria and Albert Museum whilst completing an MA in Victorian Art and Architecture. She set up the Portrait Miniatures Department at Phillip’s Auctioneers and after the amalgamation of Phillips and Bonhams she became Departmental Director.

Emma has made several television appearances and advises the Antiques Roadshow. She has written numerous articles for magazines and national newspapers. Emma has also curated and co-curated many exhibitions of portrait miniatures at the Philip Mould Gallery.

Among her significant discoveries, she recently uncovered a lost portrait miniature of Charles Dickens (now at Charles Dickens Museum).

For Austen Wednesdays, Director Lizzie Dunford and Collections and Interpretation Manager Sophie Reynolds joined Emma for a wide-ranging discussion about portrait miniatures, diving into their history and their significance in the Regency period, exploring what portrait miniatures can tell us about people Jane Austen knew and showcasing some of the portrait miniatures in the collection at Jane Austen’s House.
